Before we get into the many eye catching drag racing t shirt designs on offer here, let’s take a brief look into the history of drag racing and how it all began.
Drag racing was one of the most popular sports in America and around the world, back in the sixties and seventies. Drag racing is an exciting and thrilling spectator sport, as well as for the drivers too. In this sport usually two or more automobiles compete against one another.
In drag racing, you just have to compete a short distance. Competing at about a 1000 Feet is usually very common. This used to be 1320 feet. As technology has advanced, along with more powerful engines and drive lines, it has been realised that at the 1000 foot mark, the engines aren’t making any more power. A typical drag racing engine has reached it’s maximum RPM at the point as well. This means for last 320 feet of the drag strip, the engine is at full revs and not really achieving anything, accept wearing out very quickly.
The original 1320 feet or quarter mile as this measurement is more commonly known, came to be as this is typically the distance between stop light to stop light, on a typical American city block. The average block is an 1/8 mile and stop lights were either a block or two apart. Thus drag racing in the early 50s was a race from the standing at a stop light. First to the next stop light wins.
Of course this is very dangerous. Many people were injured or worse. So abandoned air fields were commonly used as a safer place to take part in racing from a standing start. Thus drag racing and organised drag racing events was born.
For most, drag racing is a huge part of American culture. You cannot talk about the American car culture without mentioning the importance and existence of drag racing. It is culturally irrelevant to separate the two from each other. Along with sports, drag racing is also one of the biggest icons of globalization.
It is a globalized industry, where you get sponsors too who also benefit from this hype. It is also one of those few sports which helps in bringing people together. It brings people together and is like a family. If a drag racing fan finds another fan, even just at a social gathering, they would bond together as if they have known each other for ages.
