June 21, 2020 By Dave 5 Comments

Here at Quarter Mile Addiction, we have just released our latest cool hot rod t shirts. A 1938 Willys hot rod Gasser. Completly stuffed with a blown and injected 392 Hemi. We’re sure this period looking 50s hot rod Car Toon will get plenty of Willys Love from many.

While there may be a few 1940/41 Willys coupe t shirts available on the market. We’ll never get tired of them. With this one we’ve decided to go with something a little different.

Willys Overland Motor Co – Cool Hot Rod Shirts

Cool hot rod shirts 1938 Willys pickup GasserThe Willys Americar manufacturer from the 1930’s and 40s is still one of the most popular car/truck brands in the world. Still to this day and beyond. The cars, coupes and pickups were capmpaigned in many different classes of drag racing throughout the 50s and 60s era of drag racing.

The popular Gasser class really appealed to both the drag racer and drag racing fans. With a straight axle/leaf spring front suspension. This resulted in the nose sitting high in the air. Often the engine would sit high between the fenders as well to aid with weight transfer for maximim traction.

The great thing about these early hot rods was, the fact that you could often find just about any v8 configuration installed between the fender rails. Wether it be a big gas or methonal burning super charger. Early mechanical fuel injection stacks, or carburettors in just about any form you can think of. From single 2 barrel carbs. Single four carbs. 8 single carbs. Dual quad carbs and more. It was quite the spectacle.

Willys hot rod drag carsThe there was just about every engine of choice available. The early 50s saw many Willys hot rods fitted with Ford flat head engines. Early Cadillac engines were a popular choice too. The 60s saw the later model (for the time) v8’s like the popular 392 Hemi engine as seen in this design.

With a big alcohol/nitro pumping supercharger. Flames would shoot right out of the pipes. Seen much clearer at night. This made for a really wild ride. It makes for cool hot rod shirts too!

Willys Gasser History

Although nitro/methanol drag raicng was quite popular with the crowds and drag racers, especially with the Willys. The Gasser class meant the cars were running on gasoline. This made for a much more affordable drag racing class to get invoved or race in.

This also meant there was a possibilty that the cars could litterally drive on the street. Pull into a gas station and fill up on the way to the drag strip. This wasn’t as common as you might think. Most cars were towed to the drag strip with an open trailer.

Today in 2020 the hot rod Gasser drag racing class is more popular now than ever before. There are more Gasser cars being built now, raced and driven, than there were originally back in the day. It really is racing on a budget. You don’t need paint to go fast either.

Check out the video here. This is just one small example of what’s being built and the scale of cars being purchased.

Willys Street Rods and Gassers

With the popularity of Willys cars today, be it a street legal hot rod, Gasser or dedicated drag car. There are now a handful of companies that make Willys bodies, chassis and complete tun key cars. You can find a few places listed below if you might be in the market for a future project.

  • Hillside Street Rods as shown in the video above. You’ll find their Facebook page on their website too http://hillsidestreetrods.com
  • Scotts Rods https://www.scottrodscustom.com/body-packages/street-rod-packages/1941-willys-coupe/
  • Fast Times Rods https://www.fasttimesrods.com/product-galleries/1940-1941-willys/

Well worth a look or a quick browse. There are many more aftermarket manufactureres. Which is quite a surprise given how many Willys were actually built. Here’s the best source I could find to give you a general idea of each model Willys sold.

1938 Willys Pickup Gasser

There weren’t a lot of 38 Willys pickups built either. Most Willys Gassers were either 1040-41 models or the earlier 1933 models. That’s not to say no 38 Gassers exist. This is why I chose to feature this one,as it’s a little different than every other Willys hot rod drag car.

This is cool, big time! I love cars but have limited myself to British hand made sportscars. When I read the headline of your article I was immediately thinking about Willy´s jeep. Now I know about Willys Gasser as well. I was surprised to learn that the popularity is soaring drag racing with these cars. But I understand why because it is a”cheap” ticket into competing in car races.

And last but not least the t-shirts. They are great, and I am seriously considering ordering one. It has a very cool design and me being a “petrolhead” should have one.

      Hey Roy,

Glad you like the design. I quite like British sports cars myself. The AMG being one of my favorites. The AC Cobra would be my first choice though. There are many aftermarket copies. Imagine having an original. Very rare.

This is similar in regards to the Willys. Especially the 1940-41 models. There are many aftermarket designers and builders out there. It’s a true testament to the cars popularity.

The shirts ship world wide with free shipping options available. See the link here for more shipping details

I had no idea this genre of Gasser Car Hot-rods existed. I enjoyed watching the example of pristine Gassers being built for drag racing. Do they have to find original Gasser bodies to do this or are some constructed from scratch?

The fundamental car design looks very elegant for their simplicity. It would be fun seeing them race.

I wonder of the TV Show Counting Cars have rebuilt a Gasser.

    Thanks for sharing.

      Hi Edwin

Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.

In the video shown here, the builder says he takes fibre glass molds directly from factory steel body cars. All fibre glass panels are an exact copy and will fit exactly as an original steel panel would fit. The builder is truly a craftsman of his art.

Yes counting cars has featured hot rod gassers as well Check them out on youtube.
