Why You Need a Whipple Supercharger For Mustang

Whipple supercharger for Mustang, as well as many other makes and models, are among the most popular air compressors for cars today. You can find them in numerous different sizes, and there is a high chance you can find one designed for your car specifically.

If you own a Mustang, the situation is even clearer. A blower will be the simplest way to boost performance and make your engine run even better.

If you like the idea of supercharging your Mustang, there are still a couple of things you should know. Here, we will go through some of the details that will help you understand the idea behind Whipple superchargers, as well as how to find the perfect one for your car.

Whipple Supercharger

Whipple superchargers are air compressors based on the twin-screw design. This means that they work the same way as any other Lysholm superchargers. That is, it has two screws that aren’t symmetrical, as they are in Roots-type blowers.

With Roots blowers, both rotors will have the same number of lobes (two, three, or four). When it comes to Whipple superchargers, they always have the same number of lobes, which makes them different from other types of twin-screw blowers. Whipple always has three lobes on the male rotor and five on the female rotor.

Another important thing that differentiates Whipple from other companies is that almost every single part is made in the U.S. Furthermore, the quality of Whipple blowers is exceptional. The tolerances need to be high, but the rotors will never come into contact with each other or with the casing. And this requires the entire unit to be perfect. This is one of the primary reasons why Whipple superchargers tend to be expensive, especially compared to turbochargers.

Pros Cons
Made in the U.S. Can be quite expensive
Great power on low RPM Installation can be challenging
Better efficiency compared to Roots-type Not available for all vehicles
No lag Can have temperature problems
Excellent performance and boost Noise

Whipple superchargers are one of the most popular options for drag racing since they are able to provide a boost even on low RPM. If you are interested in increasing the performance of the engine and its power, Whipple superchargers are an excellent option.

How Does It Work?

What is a Whipple supercharger and how does it work? The basic idea behind superchargers is simple. But we need to take a look at how engines work to understand how blowers make them more powerful.

The internal combustion engine needs a mixture of air and fuel to work. The mixture arrives in the combustion chamber, where it gets ignited and starts moving pistons. The only way to increase the power is to burn more fuel.

Now, it might be tempting to just add more fuel in the chamber, but it wouldn’t work. It also requires more air. The problem is that adding more mixture requires a bigger engine. And this is not something that is functional or convenient. Instead, we need to add more air but in the same space as before.

The answer to this problem is the air compressor. The device will allow you to add more air, which will allow the engine to burn more fuel, resulting in more power. And Whipple superchargers are a type of air compressor. The twin-screw design used by Whipple allows the device to compress the air on its way to the combustion chamber.

Each model of the blower will have a different size, which shows how much air it can push into the engine with a single rotation. Superchargers are usually a lot smaller compared to the engine, but you can find bigger models as well.

Upgrades – Whipple Superchargers for Mustang

Now, if you own a Mustang, you might be tempted to look for ways to improve performance. And this is a good thing. The Ford Mustang is one of the most popular vehicles in history, and taking care of it should be at the top of your priority list.

There are many different upgrades you might want to consider. However, not every upgrade will be equally effective. You can choose to:

  • Upgrade the cold-air intake
  • Upgrade the exhaust system
  • Update software
  • Clean house
  • Tune engine
  • Install a supercharger

Out of all of these upgrades, the supercharger will have the most effect. Needless to say, it is up to you to see how many upgrades you can perform. Naturally, not every person is able to perform all the necessary upgrades, which is why you might need to choose what’s best for your car.

But the chances are that installing a supercharger might be the upgrade you need. It will increase both horsepower and torque, and the difference will be more than noticeable.

The reason why so many drivers are interested in superchargers is that it improves the performance of the vehicle, and the installation is quite simple. You don’t need to spend a lot of time, and you can find models for almost every version of Mustang.

Different Generations of Ford Mustang

Before you are able to find a supercharger for your model of Mustang, there are a couple of things you need to know.

Firstly, there are a couple of different series and models of Mustang, and it is possible to find changes in the engine as well. Since superchargers are not universal, you will need to find a model designed for your series of Ford. There have been six generations of Mustang so far.

  • The first generation from 1965 to 1973
  • The second generation from 1974 to 1978
  • Third generation from 1979 to 1993
  • The fourth generation from 1994 to 2004
  • The fifth generation from 2005 to 2014
  • And the sixth generation starting from 2015

Out of all of these models, the most popular ones are from the first, second, and fifth generations. But all of these models had different series, versions, and engines that can significantly vary between each model.

Whipple Superchargers, the company, was founded in 1987. This means that you will have a harder time finding blowers for the older models of Mustang. This doesn’t mean that you are out of options, though. You can still find several different types of superchargers, but you might not be able to find one designed by Whipple. You could have Whipple custom build a supercharger for your particular application.

Whipple Supercharger in Fresno

As we mentioned before, the company was founded in 1987 and has been one of the most popular brands of superchargers ever since. The manufacturing facility is located in California, in a city called Fresno.

Here, the company is working on new designs, ideas, and ways to improve Whipple blowers even further. Every single part of Whipple superchargers is made in the U.S.

How to Find a Whipple Supercharger Kit for Your Mustang

So, the most important thing to know is the type of engine you have. There are a couple of ways you can figure this out if you don’t know the type already. Take note of:

  1. Model of Mustang
  2. Year of production
  3. Size of the engine
  4. Type of the engine

Let’s say you own a 2018 Mustang GT. Mustang GT comes with a 5.0-liter V8 engine, which means that you will need a Whipple supercharger designed for a 5.0-liter engine designed in 2018. Usually, Whipple will give you the necessary info, like what years of Mustang are supported for the specific model. Considering that this is the sixth generation of vehicles, it is quite likely that you can use the same blower on models designed after 2015.

2.3 L EcoBoost l4 3.7 L Cyclone V6 5.0 L Coyote V8 5.2 L Voodoo V8 5.2 L Predator V8
From 2015 2015 to 2017 2011 to present 2015 to 2020 2020
310 horsepower 300 horsepower 412-460 hp 526 horsepower 760 horsepower

And the same rule will apply to any other type of Mustang. All you need to do is find the one suitable for the engine of your car. Following the list above, you will be able to learn what type of engine is in your car if this is the information you’re missing.

Whipple Supercharger Kits

One of the main advantages of Whipple superchargers is that they are available in kits. This means that you will get all the necessary parts for the installation, and you won’t need to look for additional replacements. If you need something for the blower to work as intended, it will be included in the kit.

And this is one of the things that will simplify the entire installation process. Furthermore, you can combine the supercharger with other modifications we mentioned if you are looking to achieve the best possible results.

While we are on the subject of kits, installing them doesn’t require any permanent modifications. There is no need to cut or weld anything, which means that you can remove the supercharger at any point if you dislike the idea of having a powerful car (which you won’t!). While this is probably not your goal, it is nice to know that you have options.

Supercharger kits are available for numerous different models of Mustang, and you won’t have any problems finding one designed for your car.

Whipple Supercharger Installation for Mustang

Once you find the supercharger designed for your car, you can proceed to the installation. Now, installing a Whipple blower is not rocket science, but it can be complicated for those without any prior experience. When it comes to installation, you have two possible options:

  1. Install the supercharger by yourself
  2. Leave it to professionals

If you have any experience with upgrading cars, installing a supercharger by yourself shouldn’t be a problem. It usually takes around ten to twelve hours, and the only thing you will need is appropriate tools. But this option is not something every driver is comfortable with. And this means that they should opt for the second option.

Leaving everything to professionals is the safer choice, and it will eliminate the possibility of messing things up. If you don’t mind spending a bit more, you will ensure that everything goes according to plan. The price of the installation is between $500 and $1,000, but be sure to contact your local mechanic to confirm it before you proceed to the installation.

If you never did anything similar, you shouldn’t be afraid to visit the local service center and ask for all the details. Keep in mind that your primary goal is for everything to work properly, and there is nothing wrong if you decide to let someone else do it.

Maintenance of Your Whipple Supercharger – Mustang

Maintenance is important for superchargers as well. Once the device is installed, you will need to change the oil frequently. Now, the time between oil changes can vary, and it is usually as often as you change the engine oil. To be safe, always check the instruction manual since the manufacturer will state what type and brand of oil you should use, as well as how often to change it.

You might have heard stories about how superchargers can damage the engine or ruin your car, but that is not true. As long as you take care of your vehicle, nothing will go wrong. Needless to say, if you neglect it and refuse to do any maintenance, there are many things that could go wrong. Superchargers are not indestructible. But that doesn’t mean that you should be worried about what might happen.

Always check the instruction manual and ensure that you have all the information you need when it comes to maintenance. And if there is something else you should know, Whipple will undoubtedly inform you about it.

Is It Worth It?

So, the final question is whether installing a supercharger is worth it. The short answer is yes. You will get an instant boost in performance, and the difference will be noticeable. If you can afford to install a Whipple supercharger in your Mustang, you will love every single thing about it. The engine will be able to work as intended, and you will get more power from it. And it is so much fun!

And you should know that Whipple superchargers will almost always outperform Roots-type blowers. They are more efficient, less noisy, and offer an incredible increase in horsepower. Whipple supercharger can offer a 60% increase in power, and it is something you should definitely consider.

Supercharger systems will transform your Mustang in no time, and you will start wondering why you even waited for so long for this upgrade.
