Will A Hellcat Supercharger Fit A 5.7? All You Need to Know

Will A Hellcat Supercharger Fit A 5.7? Here’s What You Need to Know About Hemi Engines

Will a Hellcat supercharger fit a 5.7? Read on to find out more. Hemi engines are among the most popular engines you can find today, and the simplest way to improve performance is by installing a blower. The current generation of Hemi engines is exceptional, but you can always make it better.

If you are interested in learning more about vehicles with Hemi engines, how to upgrade them, and what your options are, you’re in the right place. Let’s talk about Hemi engines and how to make them even better!

Will a Hellcat Supercharger Fit a 5.7?

You probably heard about Hellcats and how much power they have. For those looking to upgrade a Hellcat motor, installing a supercharger is an excellent option. But before we go any further, we should discuss will a Hellcat supercharger fit a 5.7? Of course, we are talking about Hemi engines here, so installing a blower is quite a common option.

The short answer is yes — you can use a Hellcat blower on a 5.7 engine. But the process might be a bit more complex than you’d imagine. Firstly, there are many different vehicles using a 5.7 Hemi, including Dodge Challenger, Charger, and even Ram. That means that you will need to know all the details before you decide to buy a Hellcat supercharger for your car. So, let’s start from the beginning.

Alternatively, there are many different types of brands of superchargers that you can buy for your 5.7 Hemi engine. Like the Dodge Ram supercharger for example.

Hemi Engines

The first Hemi engine was introduced in 1951. Over the next couple of years, Chrysler designed hemispherical engines for vehicles like Dodge and Plymouth, and they lasted until 1958.

The second generation of Hemi engines was between 1964 and 1971, and it quickly became one of the most popular series in the world. Here, we have iconic vehicles like Dodge Charger, Challenger, and Plymouth Hemi’ Cuda.

While Chrysler designed other engines as well, they weren’t as popular as Hemi models, which inspired the company to return to the original name in 2003.

The third generation is in current models of Dodge vehicles, and it is also available in some Jeep models. The main difference in the newest series is that Chrysler abandoned the hemispherical design, but they kept the name.

If you own a car with a Hemi engine, you might be interested in boosting the performance, and the most effective way to achieve this is by installing a supercharger. But more on that in a bit.

Third Generation of Hemi Engines And Hellcat

Our focus here is on engines that appeared after 2003, which is the third generation of Hemi engines. As we mentioned before, these models are mostly used by Dodge, but you can find them in a couple of other models.

There have been four different types of Hemi engines in this generation, at least when it comes to size.

  1. 5.7-liter
  2. 6.1-liter
  3. 6.2-liter
  4. 6.4-liter

Each of these models had a couple of sub-versions as well. The most noticeable difference can be seen in the 5.7 models since Chrysler revisioned them in 2009. So the question some might ask is how does the Hellcat fit into the entire generation.

The 6.2 version of the Hemi engine is available in two different versions:

  1. Hellcat
  2. Demon

Both of these models are designed as a supercharged version of a Hemi engine. The Hellcat on Dodge Challenger was the most powerful engine designed by Chrysler until the company introduced the Demon. The second version of the 6.2 engine was only used in the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon, and it was rated at 808 horsepower. The model was introduced in 2018.

Will a Hellcat Supercharger Fit a 6.4 Engine?

This is where things become a bit complicated. As we mentioned before, Hellcat is a 6.2 engine. If you are looking for a supercharger for Hellcat, you will need a model designed for a 6.2 engine. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t find models designed for other engines as well.

So, Hellcat is a type of engine designed by Chrysler. It got the name from Grumman F6F Hellcat, an American aircraft during World War II. The good news is, Hellcat is already supercharged.

The engine comes with a twin-screw blower designed by IHI, with integrated coolers. The size of the supercharger is 2.4 liters, and it can produce 11.6 psi of boost. That means that if you are looking to get an original Hellcat supercharger, there is a high chance that it won’t be able to fit any other engine.

However, many drivers/owners are looking to upgrade from the 2.4 version to something a bit bigger (like 4.5-L). And these other models can work with different engines. For example, you can find a Hellcat supercharger that can fit a 6.4-liter Hemi, but it only applies to VVT based engines (engines with variable valve timing).

What Vehicles Use Hemi Engines

We already mentioned a couple of vehicles that use Hemi engines, but let’s take it a bit further.

5.7-liter 6.1-liter 6.2-liter 6.4-liter
Dodge Ram 300C SRT-8 Challenger SRT Hellcat Challenger SRT 392
Dodge Challenger Magnum SRT-8 Charger SRT Hellcat Charger SRT 392
Dodge Charger Charger SRT-8 Grand Cherokee Trackhawk Durango SRT
Jeep Grand Cherokee Challenger SRT-8 Durango SRT Hellcat Cherokee SRT
Chrysler 300 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT-8 Ram 1500 Rebel Wagoneer
Dodge Durango   Ram 1500 TRX

As you can see from the list, Hellcat is reserved for a special series of vehicles. The 5.7 engine is the common version, while both 6.1 and 6.4 will have different names. All 6.1 engines are on SRT-8 vehicles, while 6.4 will have either SRT or 392 in the title.

So, you can easily tell what version of the engine is in your car. The chart will also help you when trying to find a supercharger kit for your car since you will know exactly what to look for.

The list covers only the current generation of Hemi engines, though, and there are many other vehicles and versions with the 5.7 engine. The important thing to notice is that the other three models will have different names, so you’ll have an easier time spotting them.

Another common question asked is, can I supercharge my 5.7 Hemi? Find out more including installation and maintenance tips here.

Are Superchargers Good?

One of the things that many drivers want to know is whether superchargers are good. And the short answer is yes. The idea behind superchargers is quite simple, and since each supercharger is designed for a specific engine, the manufacturer paid attention to all the details to avoid damaging the original engine.

In short, installing a supercharger will give you a significant boost in performance, and it can add more than 100 horsepower. Naturally, the increase in performance is based on the original power of the engine, and the more powerful the engine is, the easier it is to increase the number of hp.

It is worth mentioning that superchargers won’t damage the engine. As long as you take care of your car, you shouldn’t experience any problems, and the supercharger won’t cause harm to your vehicle. Keeping within the recommended boost levels is also key to longevity of the engine.

If we are talking about performance, there is nothing that will improve your car as well as superchargers can. They offer a significant boost in power, and they allow your engine to work as well as it can.

Installation and Maintenance

The next thing on the list to discuss is installation. Once you find a supercharger you like, you will want to install it. There are two ways you can approach the problem. Firstly, you can install the blower by yourself. If you are comfortable with this type of work, you will need appropriate tools and enough time. The process usually takes around 12 hours, and it isn’t as complex as you might imagine. However, we would recommend not doing it alone if you are inexperienced.

When it comes to the second option, you can always buy a supercharger kit and leave everything to the professionals. There are people out there who can install a blower into your vehicle without any issues. Of course, this will add to your bill, but it is the safer option since there is no chance that something will go wrong during the installation.

Once the supercharger is installed, you will need to replace the oil in the blower. The purpose of the oil is to act as a coolant and lubricant, and it is essential for the proper work of the supercharger. In general, you should replace the oil as often as you change it in the engine. To ensure that you are doing everything correctly, you can always check what the manufacturer suggests for how often to replace oil or what brand to use.

Will Hellcat Supercharger Fit 6.1 Engine?

You can find models of Hellcat superchargers that can fit 6.1 engines. Usually, you can use them on non-VVT models made between 2005 and 2010. These are all SRT-8 engines, as we mentioned before, and you can get quite a nice boost by installing a blower.

Chrysler 300C SRT-8 From 2005 to 2010 425 hp and 420 lb⋅ft of torque
Dodge Magnum SRT-8 From 2006 to 2008 425 hp and 420 lb⋅ft of torque
Dodge Charger SRT-8 From 2006 to 2010 425 hp and 420 lb⋅ft of torque
Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT-8 From 2006 to 2010 420 hp and 420 lb⋅ft of torque
Dodge Challenger SRT-8 From 2008 to 2010 425 hp and 420 lb⋅ft of torque

Of course, the important thing here to remind everyone is that Hellcat is a series of engines. A Hellcat supercharger is usually referred to the size of the blower, which is 2.4 litres. When you hear people talk about Hellcat, it usually refers to ridiculously high power you can get by installing a blower. You can also check out other superchargers for Hemi engines, and there is a chance that you’ll find something you’d like even more.

The main advantage of Hemi engines is their popularity, which allows you to choose between many different models of superchargers. You can find Roots-type, twin-screw, Whipple, and many others. So, don’t hesitate to see what models are on the market for your type of engine.

How to Find a Supercharger for Your Hemi

Once you start searching for a supercharger, there are a couple of things you need to worry about. The process is quite simple once you understand how everything works. You will need to know the following:

  • Series of the vehicle
  • Year
  • Engine type
  • Engine size

Knowing all of these details will allow you to easily find the supercharger of your dreams. And the best thing about it is that the manufacturer of the blower will usually tell you whether you can use the supercharger on your engine.

Usually, you will find all the important details about the supercharger, and the manufacturer will write everything you need to know. Let’s take a look at one example. You find a supercharger for 5.7 Hemi and 6.4 VVT Based Engines made between 2011 and 2019. If you own a Dodge Charger R/T with a 5.7 engine made in 2017, you’ll be able to safely buy the supercharger.

Other Ways to Boost Performance

For those looking to increase the performance of the engine, there are a couple of upgrades you might want to consider. Each of these modifications will increase horsepower and torque, and if you combine everything with a new blower, the results will be incredible.

You can try out the following:

  • Tune-up on the engine
  • Install a cold-air intake
  • New aftermarket exhaust system
  • Get an engine tuner
  • Install a high-flow air filter
  • Get new software
  • Upgrade wheels

Each of these upgrades will improve how your vehicle performs, and it is up to you to choose which ones you want to do. Of course, improving every part of your car will have the best possible results.

Will Hellcat Supercharger Fit 6.4 Engine

If you own a vehicle with a 6.4 Hemi engine, you can find a supercharger kit that will increase its power. There are so many different options for blowers, and it is up to you to find the one you’ll enjoy.

For those that are interested in Hellcat blowers, you can find models that work with VVT-based engines made between 2011 and 2019. Of course, there are other options you can find out as well.

Our recommendation is to always go for a supercharger kit since it will arrive with all the necessary parts you will need to upgrade. This way, you won’t need to search for replacements elsewhere, and you can start using your new supercharged engine in no time.

If you get a supercharger installed on your 5.7 would you need a tune?

Hi Wu, that’s a very good question. Yes, I would definitely recommend a tune once you’ve installed a supercharger onto a 5.7 Hemi, or any engine for that matter. There’s risk of engine damage/failure if you don’t re tune the engine.
