The small block Mopar supercharger kits, we are featuring today, are a direct bolt on for 1967 to 1976 A Body Dodge Dart & Demon. Also included as a direct bolt on is the 1967 – 1976 Plymouth Scamp & Valiant. They’ll also fit the 1967 to 1969 Plymouth Barracuda. For models equipped or fitted with either the 318, 340 and 360 cubic inch small block v8 engines.
The forced induction kits are from Vortec/Paxton featuring the NOVI-1200 supercharger. With the supplied pully ratio that comes with the standard kit, a 7 to 8 PSI boost can be expected. At around 6000 RPM on a slightly modified 340 engine. Expected horsepower gains are around 30 to 75% plus range. This will depend on boost levels and engine volumetric efficiency.
They are ideal for pump gas or race gas applications. They’d make a perfect little street/strip brawler on a budget. Performance Injection Equipment offers a complete turn-key 360 cubic inch crate engine with a very similar Vortech setup. The engine makes 532RWHP at 5600RPM. The cost is $12500 for the complete turn-key package. Paxton Supercharger Kit Installation Notes
You may need a replacement hood or make modifications to your hood for clearance. You will need to upgrade your fuel system as well. You’ll need larger fuel lines and a boost-referenced fuel pump. An ignition amplifier is recommended but not required. You may also need to modify your throttle cable and or throttle arm. The systems aren’t 50-state smog legal either.
The following basic recommendations for best performance and durability are as follows:
- Use premium 91 octane or higher fuel
- Engine must have stock or lower than stock compression for boost
- Keep an ear out for pinging or detonation. Do not drive under boost until detonation is resolved
- Perform an oil change after installation of the kit and before use of the vehicle
- Use high grade ‘SF’ rated engine oil or a high-quality synthetic oil
- Change engine oil every 3000 miles
- Before use change spark plugs to a one or two-step colder heat range
- Reset timing to no more than 26⁰ total timing or install a boost retard ignition
The kit comes with complete instructions to install yourself or have a mechanic install the kit for you. It shouldn’t take any more than a day to complete the install.

Supercharger Re-builds & Servicing
A note to be aware of is that Vortech’s corporate headquarters is the only place authorized to service all Vortech supercharger systems. If you were to service your supercharger with anyone else other than Vortech, your warranty is immediately void. All servicing repairs and rebuilds are done at the Vortech factory by skilled technicians. Vortech also offers supercharger exchange programs. Contact Vortech or visit their website for more details.
As you can imagine, the better heads you have installed on your engine the more gains you will see, from simply bolting on the kit and tuning the engine for boost. Although the small block Mopar supercharger kit can be used on your factory stock engine, you may consider some simple engine upgrades before installation, for optimum performance.
A quick point I’d like to make first is the fact that an intercooler or water and or methanol injection is not required. This makes installation a lot easier, as there is no added expense of fitment or custom fabrication needed. As you can see in the photo above, there’s simply an elbow or pipe bend with the high-flow air filter attached. Drawing in cold or fresh air directly into the supercharger. The air is then blown straight into the carburetor enclosure assembly.

You’ll notice kits for later model Dodge Challenger or Chargers and other brands are supplied with water-to-air intercoolers. Depending on your desired boost levels and performance goals, this could also be an added addition to this kit. Although with low-boost street applications, this option isn’t necessary. Vortech or Paxton, (they are the same company) offer many upgrades such as intercoolers, fuel systems, and ignition systems too. If you’re really serious about making power with a kit like this, they are only a phone call away.
Having said that, you may want to consider a camshaft upgrade for boost. Something with a wide camshaft lobe separation of around 112 to 114. This way you’ll ensure no boost is blown directly out of the exhaust ports. You may also consider either porting your factory cast iron heads or going for a new set of heads as such as the Edelbrock Performer RPMs. To use with your small block Mopar 318 supercharger kit. I’ve written a full review of the Edelbrock heads for the LA series engine here http://quartermileaddiction.com/small-block-mopar-heads-for-sale/
Small Block Mopar Supercharger Systems Conclusion
I’m sure you’ll agree this would be the best small-block Mopar supercharger kit. It’s a relatively simple install. Compact, fairly light, (shipping weight is approx 45lbs). The kit fits under the hood (minimal modifications may be required). This will allow you to drive the car in almost any weather conditions, rain, hail, or shine. Sure, a roots blower looks cool, but nowhere near as efficient.
The kit comes in either a satin or polished finish. Also seeing that the kit fits most A-body model cars it will easily fit any 1967 to 1976 Dodge or Plymouth B or E body models too, and almost anything in between. All Vortech Mopar 340 supercharger kits come with a 3-year unlimited mileage warranty and an exclusive supercharger efficiency guarantee standard.
